What to do right now
Burst pipe or major leak
Shut off the main water valve, usually where the water line enters the house. Open a faucet to relieve pressure. Keep away from water near outlets or electrical panels.
Sewer backup
Stop running water and flushing toilets. Keep people and pets away from the affected area.
Gas smell
Leave immediately. Do not use light switches or phones inside. Call your gas utility’s emergency line or 911 from outside.
Carbon monoxide alarm
Get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911. Do not go back in until responders say it is safe.
No heat
Check that the thermostat is set to heat, replace a clogged filter, check the breaker, and clear snow from the plastic vent pipes outside. If the furnace still will not run, call. Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to keep pipes from freezing.
No cooling
Check the thermostat, filter and breaker. If the outdoor unit is iced over, turn cooling off and run the fan only.
