Ares Plumbing & HVAC installs whole-home air filtration, humidifiers and ventilation systems across the Wasatch Front. Utah has two air quality seasons, winter inversions and summer wildfire smoke, and both put fine particles in the air. The most effective upgrade for most homes is a better filter in a properly sized cabinet, run with the fan on during bad air days.

Signs you need it
- Dust that returns right after cleaning
- Allergy or asthma symptoms indoors
- Dry air, static and cracked woodwork in winter
- Smoke smell indoors during fire season
What we do
- Upgrade to a media filter cabinet (MERV 11 to 13) your blower can handle
- Add whole-home humidification for dry winters
- Install ventilation (ERV or HRV) for fresh air without the energy loss
- Check ductwork for leaks that pull in dusty attic or crawl space air
What is different in Utah
During an inversion, fine particulate builds up in the valleys for days. A high-MERV filter with the fan running continuously lowers indoor levels noticeably. Utah winters are also very dry, and a humidifier makes the same temperature feel warmer.

Frequently asked questions
What MERV rating should I use?
MERV 11 to 13 captures most fine particles. Higher ratings in a one-inch filter can restrict airflow, so we often install a thicker media cabinet instead.
Should I run my fan during an inversion?
Yes. Setting the fan to on or circulate keeps air moving through the filter even when the system is not heating.
Do I need a humidifier in Utah?
Many homes benefit from one in winter. Indoor air here gets very dry, which causes static, dry skin and shrinking woodwork.
