A tankless water heater typically costs $3,500 to $6,500 installed in Utah. These are estimates. The unit itself is only part of the price. Most of the range comes from what the house needs to support it: a larger gas line, new venting, a condensate drain and isolation valves for descaling.
What drives the price
- The size of the unit, set by how many fixtures run at once and winter inlet temperature
- Gas line upgrades, since tankless units burn far more gas per hour than a tank
- Venting and condensate drain for high-efficiency models
- Where the unit mounts and how far the piping has to move
- Permit and inspection fees
Tankless versus a new tank
A standard tank replacement typically costs $1,800 to $3,500, so tankless is roughly double up front. In exchange you get continuous hot water, about twice the service life with maintenance, and floor space back.
Plan for hard water
Utah’s hard water scales the heat exchanger. Either add a water softener or plan on a descaling service about once a year. Skipping both shortens the life of the unit and can void the manufacturer’s warranty.
Frequently asked questions
Is tankless worth the extra cost?
It is if you run out of hot water, plan to stay in the home for many years, or need the space. If your tank meets your needs, a new tank costs less.
Can I use my existing gas line?
Sometimes. Many homes need a larger line because tankless units need much more gas while running. We calculate it before quoting.
How long does installation take?
Most installations take most of a day, longer if the gas line or venting needs significant work.
